Ecological Faith Conversation I

Recovering our Sense of Awe and Wonder

Conversations took place: Tuesday 5th (2.00 -3 :00pm and 7.00 – 8.00pm) and Wednesday 6th September (10.30 – 11.30am)

To help us understand Pope Francis’ passion for the environment we began by listening to Francis explaining why he choose the name Francis:

Francis of Assisi – the man of poverty, the man of peace, the man who loves and guards creation. And Pope Francis said that at this time we have arelationship with creation that is not good.

With such a concern it was not surprising that Pope Francis issued the encyclical Laudato Si’ in March 2015.

To get an overview of the key points of the encyclial we watched a short film in which Fr James Martin identifies what for him are the ‘Top Ten Takewaysfrom ‘Laudato Si”:

If you wish to read the article by Fr James which was published in America: The Jesuit Review please click this link: ‘Top Ten Takeaways from ‘Laudato Si” – America, June 18, 2015

Our session then focused on:

Teach us to discover the worth of each thing,

to be filled with awe and contemplation,

to recognize that we are profoundly united with every creature

as we journey towards your infinite light.

~ Prayer for Our Earth from Laudato Si

To help us get a sense of the wonder and beauty of creation we watched a slightly edited version of  The Awakening Universe

We then shared our insights and thoughts and finished with by saying together the

Prayer for our Earth

All-powerful God,you

you are present in the whole universe

and in the smallest of your creatures.

You embrace with your tenderness

all that exists.

Pour out upon us the power of your love,

that we may protect life and beauty.

Fill us with peace,

that we may live as brothers and sisters,

harming no one.

O God of the poor,

help us to rescue the abandoned

and forgotten of this earth,

so precious in your eyes.

Bring healing to our lives,

that we may protect the worldand not prey on it,

that we may sow beauty,

not pollution and destruction.

Touch the hearts of those who look only for gain

at the expense of the poor and the earth.

Teach us to discover the worth of each thing,

to be filled with awe and contemplation,to

to recognize that we are profoundly united with every creature

as we journey towards your infinite light.

We thank you for being with us each day.

Encourage us, we pray,

in our struggle for justice, love and peace.
